Sorry for not putting this up earlier this year, but school and life in general has keeping me busy. So, here is my opinion on where cosplay is at now and the possible future.
First off, I have been cosplay on and off and on again since 2006 at (now non-existent) JACON in Orlando. I have cosplayed around 5 different characters (2 from Anime, 1 from a RPG game, and 2 OCs (original cosplay or character)). So, most of my opinions on cosplay is from what experienced over the years.
From what I seen, I believe there are two categories of cosplayers, the cosplay builders and cosplay models.
Cosplay Builders are the cosplayers who create their own cosplays like weapon/armor props and sewing fabrics.
Cosplay Models are cosplayers who completely bought their cosplays even it is store-bought or commissioned by someone else like katersoneseven and some of the "booth babes". Plus, most "newbies" who starting out in the cosplay community fall into this category.
I am a cosplay builder due the fact that I build all of my props and I am starting soon to sew, so I do not rely on someone else to do the sewing for me. I believe it is more rewarding to create your own cosplay and you get more props from other cosplayers especially you get yourself more time working on the cosplay instead of a "rushed" cosplay.
As for the state of cosplay currently, it saddens me that people who are in the community are starting to act like elitists who try to exclude new people to come into the cosplay community. Also, a lot of putting down people if they are not up to the skill of the likes of Yaya Hun, Riddle's Messy Wardrobe and alot of professional cosplayers. I have seen this shit and it needs to stop.
In the future of cosplay, I believe that more good materials like Worbla Fine Art (it is a thermoplastic that it makes a good detailed armor and weapon props). Plus, more people who come in to the cosplay community, the more creative we will all be.
Also, if anyone of you who are planning to starting to cosplay soon, please do not be discouraged if you cosplay does not out very good. We all in the cosplay community start out badly at first. It takes time to strengthen any new skill.
Well, that is my thoughts on cosplay and I will try to be more current on my journals here at Deviant Art.
Please comment, I would like to read your thoughts and please do not argue with me. This is my opinion from my personal experience, so keep that in mind when you comment.
